Beyond the Horizon, A story of redemption through fly fishing

Beyond the Horizon tells the inspiring story of Rankin Jackson, who navigates the challenges of providing for his family amid the turmoil of drug running in Guanaja, Honduras. This remote paradise grapples with hurricanes, poverty, political instability, and corruption, affecting its 15,000 islanders who rely on the land and sea for survival. With marine life overfished and dwindling, the community faces dire economic hardships.

Despite these challenges, the elusive permit fishery has flourished, offering a glimmer of hope. Once a staple for islanders, the permit has become a symbol of sustainable fishing thanks to the influence of Fly Fish Guanaja. This small fly lodge has sparked a catch-and-release ethic, fostering new opportunities for the local community and helping them turn the tide against overfishing.

Guanaja’s rich history is marked by tales of treasure and conflict, from the days of pirates to the current drug trade. Ten years ago, Rankin found a chance to work at Fly Fish Guanaja as a security guard, quickly rising to become one of Honduras’s most respected fly guides.

At the heart of this adventure lies the Cayes Cajones, a hidden gem surrounded by endless flats teeming with permit and bonefish. Despite the dangers posed by drug cartels, pirates, and hostile indigenous groups, Rankin’s deep knowledge of the region has long pointed to these elusive waters. After years of planning, 2017 marked the beginning of a daring mission to venture Beyond the Horizon and explore the legends beneath the surface
